The first chapter of They Say I Say focuses on one main point, summarize others views before summarizing your own. They make this seem like an extremely important point when writing an essay or book expressing your opinion on a subject. The reason it is important is so you can make a good argument on what your opinion is. Without expressing the ideas of others, one cannot make an argument on why they believe their opinion is better than another persons opinion. Not only should one summarize the other opinion in the beginning, but throughout their essay to reflect on why their opinion is better or more justified than the others.
The second and third chapters are all about not writing completely biased essays, but to take into account others opinions and include quotes from other people even if they oppose your opinion. In the third chapter they focus a lot on quoting other people. It is important to quote others because it gives your essay credibility and shows that you have concrete evidence of what opinions have already been expressed. By showing this evidence, one can better express their own opinions and back them up with evidence against the quoted opinions. The main point of the beginning of this book is to include others opinions before stating your own opinions.
